ICRC closes its office in Ingushetia

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has decided to close its office in Nazran. This was reported on June 11 by the press service of the ICRC.

The ICRC will continue to support a number of programmes in Ingushetia. This was announced by Carlos Morazzani, the head of the ICRC's representative offices in Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and North Ossetia.

"The ICRC will continue its activities in Northern Caucasus from its offices in Nalchik, Grozny, and Khasavyurt. The ICRC will take into account the existing needs and will continuously optimize its activities," the "Agency for Social Information" quotes Carlos Morazzani as saying with reference to the press service.

The ICRC has launched an operation in Northern Caucasus to distribute humanitarian assistance since the beginning of the first Chechen conflict in 1994, which lasted until 2007. During the period of the ICRC's activities, the economic assistance was rendered to more than 2000 families of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ingushetia. Each year during the period of 1999-2006, more than half a million of IDPs in Ingushetia were provided with food aid.

The ICRC also renders assistance in the search for missing persons in Northern Caucasus.
