Yerevan activists to hold long-term protests to defend Afrikyans' Clubhouse
On June 11, the civil initiative "Save Afrikyans' Clubhouse" organized a protest action against the demolition of the house No. 11 in Teryan Street in the centre of Yerevan. Protestors filmed a video, in which city residents expressed their attitude to the decision to demolish the building.
The Afrikyans' Clubhouse is very important for Yerevan residents, and it can be considered "the last of the buildings from the late 19th century." This opinion has been expressed by Aik Biyandjyan, an activist and a photographer.
"This is a very valuable building because of its style and structure. Besides, it hosted the first Yerevan club," Aik Biyandjyan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to the activist, the building can be saved under the only condition if the protest action gathers many people, concerned about the future of their city. "If the residents of Yerevan prefer to live in concrete buildings, they can safely treat dismantling of the architectural monument. And if they want to live in the city with memories they can pass on to their children, they should come to the defence of the building," Aik Biyandjyan has stated.
