Azerbaijani official wants to sue editor of "Yeni Musavat"

A lawsuit was lodged in Azerbaijan against Zabil Mugabiloglu, the editor-in-chief of the new website "Gunxeber.com" and the newspaper "Yeni Musavat". The journalist is accused of defamation and faces up to three years of imprisonment.

The lawsuit was filed by Suleiman Bashirov, the head of the division for culture and tourism of the Imishli District after the article named "William Gadjiev's Attestation Bribe" was posted on May 30 on the "Gunxeber.com".

The article reported that the above division was holding staff attestation and asserted that Suleiman Bashirov extorted money from his subordinates for successful attestation.

Mugabiloglu treats the lawsuit as illegal and politically motivated.

"By submitting the lawsuit demanding to bring me to criminal liability, they pursue the aim of intimidating heads of other news websites, so that they stop criticizing the problems of bribery and corruption in the districts," said the journalist.
