In Baku, prosecutor asks to sentence Facebook user Omar Mamedov to 6 years of imprisonment
In Azerbaijan, at the trial in the case against Facebook activist Omar Mamedov, a member of the Civil Solidarity Party, who is accused of drug trafficking, the court has started pleadings. Public prosecutor believes the defendant's guilt is proven and asks to sentence him to six years of imprisonment.
It has been reported that Omar Mamedov, a 19-year-old activist of the Civil Solidarity Party, a co-founder of the Azerbaijani educational movement "Akhyn" (Stream), was detained on January 24. The activist is accused of selling drugs on a large scale, and he is kept in custody.
The defendant has stated that the criminal case against him is "politically motivated", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
Let us remind you that Omar Mamedov is an active user of social networks. In particular, he used to be one of the administrators of the page "Abstracts from AzTV" (the Azerbaijani State TV Company, note of the "Caucasian Knot") in Facebook. The page publishes cartoons and satirical texts about the authorities of Azerbaijan. After his arrest, Omar Mamedov has re-entered the youth movement "Nida", which he quitted in the spring of 2013.
