In Georgia, residents of Sagarejo District report on threat of disruption of water supply because of oil production

On June 20, residents of the Sagarejo District located in the eastern part of Georgia held an action to protest against operations for oil production near a source of drinking water.

In the town of Satava, the Polish company hired by the Company "Canargo Georgia" made attempts to conduct exploration works with blasting operations to extract oil, from where the Sagarejo District is provided with drinking water. However, the local residents did not allow the exploration vehicle to approach the place of the works, the "InterpressNews" reports.

According to the protesters, in the case if the Polish company conducts blasting operations, the population of the Sagarejo District will be deprived of drinking water supply. This was reported by the "Georgia-Online".

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on June 24, 2005, residents of several villages in the Sagarejo Districts held protest actions demanding that the Company "Canargo Georgia" should give compensation and eliminate the consequences of the accident, which occurred on September 10, 2004, at one of its oil wells located near the village of Ninotsminda. On that day, during drilling operations, oil broke through an oil well. As a result, about 40 hectares of farmlands and forests were contaminated.
