Accused killer of Khasavyurt District head sentenced to 15 years in prison

A court in Moscow has found Khabib Umakhanov guilty of killing Alimsoltan Alkhamatov, the head of the Khasavyurt District of Dagestan, and sentenced him to 15 years in a high security colony, said the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Alimsoltan Alkhamatov was killed on September 27, 2009, in Moscow. During the attack, his bodyguard Nadjmutdin Mitikov was heavily wounded. According to investigators, apart from Umakhanov, the attackers were Khabib Budaikhanov (sentenced to 12 years in prison), Gilani Sayipov (sentenced to 13 years), Mikail Kadiev (sentenced to two years in prison in Georgia under another charge) and Zaurbek Magomedov (killed at detention). The Umakhanov's case arrived in the Gagarin Court of Moscow on April 24, 2014.

Khabib Umakhanov was found guilty under the articles of "murder committed by an organized group by a publicly dangerous manner", "attempted murder" and "illegal arms circulation, committed by an organized group". The court sentenced him to 15 years in a high security colony. The highest punishment under these articles is life imprisonment.

According to the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation, Khabib Umakhanov escaped from inquiry; in 2010, he was put on the international wanted list; in October 2012, he was detained in Germany; and in November 2012 – extradited to Russia.
