ECtHR upholds two complaints of Chechens from Kurgan Region

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has satisfied the complaints "Amadaev vs. Russia" and "Antaev et al. vs. Russia", where the applicants are the Chechens living in the Kurgan Region. They were awarded a total of 145,000 euros as compensation of suffered moral harm.

The complaints dealt with the use of nationalistically-motivated violence and unwillingness of Russian authorities to investigate into these incidents.

The applicant of the first complaint "Amadaev vs. Russia" was Zhanar-Ali Amadaev, who lives in the village of Chastoozerye in the Kurgan Region. According to the materials of his complaint, in 2002, there were interethnic conflicts in the area; he and his friends were attacked; and they were beaten with baseball bats. During the investigation, suspects were found, but the inquiry was never completed.

The applicants of the second complaint "Antaev et al. vs. Russia" were members of the Antaev and Vashaev families (10 persons in total), living in the Vargashi District of the Kurgan Region. According to their version, in 2006 their houses were searched in connection with the participation of two of the family members in a brawl. During the searches, eight applicants, as stated in their complaint, were beaten up by the police.
