During week of June 30-July 6, 2014, six persons perished in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of June 30-July 6, 2014, six persons were killed and at least three other persons were wounded in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes five suspected members of the armed underground, including four in Dagestan and one in Chechnya. Besides, one civilian was killed in Dagestan.

Attacks on law enforcers

On July 3, at about midnight, in Makhachkala, law enforcers tried to detain a man in Shamil Avenue near house No. 55. The suspect rendered armed resistance, and he was killed. The law enforcers found with him a Glock pistol and a grenade. The killed man was identified as 24-year-old Rizvan Aliev, a former student of the Faculty for Physics and Mathematics of the Dagestani State University (DSU). Earlier, he was put on the federal wanted list for a number of terrorist crimes. According to the operational headquarters of the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), the killed man was involved in several major terror acts, including undermining of a checkpoint of road-and-patrol service (known as DPS) in May 2012, numerous acts of extortion of large amounts of money from entrepreneurs, and murders of law enforcers and civilians.

On July 3, in the Staropromyslovsky District of Grozny, a man wanted on suspicion of murder of a policeman on June 22 was killed, when he rendered armed resistance.

Policemen encountered the suspect at a bus stop located at the intersection of Fevralskaya and Altaiskaya Streets. The policemen thought the young man behaved suspiciously, and they demanded that he should show his ID. In response, the suspect took out a hidden Makarov pistol and opened fire on the policemen. He was killed by return fire.

Investigators found with the killed man the pistol with loaded magazine and a hand grenade. No law enforcer suffered. The killed man has been identified as Khusein Dakhtaev, a resident of the Urus-Martan District of Chechnya, who had been put on the wanted list for involvement in illegal armed formations (IAFs).

Special and counterterrorist operations

Starting from July 1, in the vicinity of villages of Maidanskoe and Balakhani of the Untsukul District of Dagestan, law enforcers conduct inspections and comb a wooded area. They are looking for members of IAFs. A regime of counterterrorist operation (CTO) was introduced within the territory of the Untsukul District.

On July 6, in the villages of Maidanskoe, two policemen were severely wounded in an armed clash. One of the attackers was killed by return fire. According to other reports, three policemen were wounded in the shootout in the Untsukul District of Dagestan.

Bombings and terror acts

On June 30, inGuliev Street in the city of Karabulak (Ingushetia), a young man was injured as a result of a car explosion. Unidentified persons threw a Molotov cocktail in the car. After the car caught fire, the son of the driver came out to see what was happening. When the young man approached the burning car, the explosion occurred. The young man got injuries and burns, and he was hospitalized in the RepublicHospital in Nazran. Doctors estimate his condition as "one close to satisfactory".

On July 5, at the 15th kilometre of the road "Arakani-Buynaksk", near the village of Arakani of the Untsukul District of Dagestan, law enforcers found a body of an unidentified man with injuries got in land mine explosion and multiple shrapnel wounds. At a distance of 60 meters, they found a body of another person, who died in an explosion of unidentified improvised explosive device (IED) with power of approximately 5 kg of TNT equivalent. At the place of the incident, the investigating team found two sets of camouflage uniform, electric fuse, a reel of cable, a coil of wire, and a piece of rosin.

Attacks on civilians

In the evening of June 30, inTarkinsky   Street in Makhachkala, unidentified persons killed Mustafa Ramazanov, an owner of several restaurants and cafes. When the businessman left the car near his house, the unidentified attackers drove up in a white Lada Priora car. They shot and killed Mustafa Ramazanov. The victim repeatedly received flashcards with threats from militants, in which they demanded to transfer money for a "holy war against infidels."

Detentions

On July 4, law enforcers conducted mass detentions of believers at several mosques in Dagestan. In Makhachkala, the detentions took place at mosques located in Kotrov and Hungarian Soldiers Streets and in the village of Shamkhal. Besides, believers were also detained at mosques in Izberbash and Novokayakent. Similar detention took place in the Salafi mosque in Khasavyurt. In the mosque located in Kotrov Street in Makhachkala, from 7 to 15 persons were taken away to some unknown destination. On the same day, the believers detained at mosques of different cities and villages were sent home.
