Dagestan: appeal against Zarema Bagavutdinova's verdict scheduled for July 23

The appeal against the verdict to Zarema Bagavutdinova, an activist of the Dagestani Regional Public Organization (DRPO) "Pravozaschita" (Advocacy), will be held on July 23, said her advocate Ziyautdin Uvaisov.

Bagavutdinova was convicted by the Buynaksk City Court on May 21. She was found guilty of allegedly recruiting in November 2011 of Mamma Dalgatov, a native of Dagestan, to participate in the armed underground. The prosecution asked the court to sentence her to six years in prison.

The Supreme Court of Dagestan had initially appointed the consideration of the appeal for July 9; however, on July 7, the advocate Ziyautdin Uvaisov petitioned to adjourn the session because of his illness.

Now, Uvaisov, who was invited to defend Bagavutdinova by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the Supreme Court of Dagestan has appointed a new date for considering the appeal – July 23.

According to the lawyer, at the session of the Supreme Court he intends to present a detailed text of the complaint against the verdict passed by the Buynaksk City Court.
