State employees claim being forced to attend subbotniks in Grozny

A forced participation in the subbotniks (free of charge work on weekends), held on the eve of May holidays, was reported by residents of Grozny, interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Before the Easter, the May and other holidays, we're obliged to take part in subbotniks: we clean-up the streets, trim and paint trees, clean-up cemeteries and so on," a woman-employee of one of the republic's agencies, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent on condition of anonymity.

"Many people are annoyed, but you can't skip subbotniks, otherwise you may be sacked. This is a common practice of forced labour, which has long become a norm," the woman has added.

The republic's authorities "are annually and repeatedly using people as free labour force," said Adlan, a local resident told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, and added: "The Communist Party and the Soviet Union no longer exist, but the 'communist subbotniks', introduced by the Soviet regime, are still here."
