About 400,000 people take part in subbotniks in Chechnya

In Chechnya, employees of public institutions have called their participation in the voluntary Saturday works (subbotniks) organized by the authorities as "voluntary-compulsory." During six weeks, about 400,000 people took part in the large-scale cleaning of the city. This was reported by the administration of the Chechen leader and the government of Chechnya.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the period of March 1-31, the Grozny authorities announced a month for sanitary cleaning and improvement of the city. Employees of public institutions complained that they had to take part in subbotniks not only on weekends, but also on working days.

"At last, we got a chance to work at own yard and garden. Not only were we attracted to work on weekends, but during working hours, we had to do garbage collection in various areas in accordance with the instructions of our chiefs," said Leila, an employee of one of the public institutions of the region.

"For me, the most unpleasant thing in those subbotniks is not even the fact that I had to do someone else's work and be distracted at the weekends, but it is to see how the territory cleaned a day or two ago is again full of garbage. I do not understand why our people stopped appreciating the labour of others," noted student Khamzat.

He believes "it's impossible to solve a problem with voluntary Saturday works only." "We need to impose large fines for pollution of territories," the student notes.
