South Ossetia asks Russia to recognize Ossetian genocide
The Russian Parliament has agreed to consider the today's appeal received from South-Ossetian MPs to recognize the genocide of the Ossetian population. In its turn, the Georgian Parliament has treated the Russia's intention as a willingly helpless attempt to change the history.
The text of the appeal is posted on the website of South-Ossetian Parliament; the MPs ask to receive them at the Russia's Federation Council (the Supreme House of the Parliament) of to discuss the recognition of the South-Ossetian genocide in the context of the upcoming in 2020 "anniversary of the national tragedy of South Ossetia."
"In June 1920, the government of Georgia, which had declared its independence, sent troops to suppress South Ossetia, which had claimed its right to self-determination and joining the Soviet Russia. Georgian troops destroyed most of the dwelling settlements of South Ossetia [...]. Several thousand Ossetian civilians fell victim to the massacre," the South-Ossetian MPs state in their appeal.
"The State Duma has attentively treated the appeal of South-Ossetian MPs on the recognition of the genocide of South Ossetians in 1920 by Georgia. At the next sitting of the State Duma Council, we'll consider this appeal," the State Duma website quotes its Speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin.
Tamar Chugoshvili, a Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, has treated Mr Volodin's response to the appeal of South-Ossetian MPs as Russia's attempts to "change the history, which will be unsuccessful."
