Advocate points to no progress in Marem Alieva's murder case

The murder case of Marem Alieva, a resident of Ingushetia, who disappeared four years ago, remains unsolved. The communication of her sister's complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) could lead to a resumption of the investigation in Russia, said Olga Gnezdilova, an advocate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Marem Alieva disappeared in September 2015. In September 2017, the ECtHR communicated a complaint about an inefficient inquiry into Marem's disappearance lodged by her sister, Elizaveta Alieva. On September 25, 2019, it became known that the ECtHR combined the complaint of Elizaveta Alieva about her own abduction with the earlier one – about the murder of her sister, Marem Alieva.

Earlier, Elizaveta Alieva herself told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that she had received threats constantly since the Marem Alieva disappeared. They demanded from her to recall the applications. Besides, she said that her elder disabled sister, who lives in Ingushetia, also received threats.

The inquiry within the criminal case of Marem Alieva's disappearance was suspended "due to the impossibility of identifying the person to be attracted as a suspect," Olga Gnezdilova, an advocate of the "Legal Initiative" Project, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Now, Elizaveta is in a relatively safe place and, as far as I know, she received no threats lately. But given the communication of her complaint at the ECtHR, the investigation in Russia may resume; and then, we can expect a new wave of pressure," said the advocate.

Earlier, Ms Gnezdilova reported that Marem Alieva had repeatedly run away from home; however, her relatives constantly brought her back. In summer of 2015, she and her three children left for the crisis centre, first in Moscow, then in Minsk. However, her husband returned her and the children home.
