In Stavropol, court leaves Akhmed Barakhoev under custody

The Stavropol Territorial Court has dismissed a complaint about the arrest until February 10 of Ingush activist Akhmed Barakhoev, who was charged in a case on calls for riots and an attack on law enforcers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from April 3, Akhmed Barakhoev has been under arrest in a criminal case on the calls for riots and the use of violence against a public officer. On November 7, his arrest was extended until February 10, 2020.

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" recognized as political prisoners Akhmed Barakhoev and four other protest leaders in Ingushetia.

The Stavropol Territorial Court dismissed the complaint filed about the court's decision to extend the detention of Akhmed Barakhoev, his advocate Fatima Urusova reported.

Today, at trial, Akhmed Barakhoev has delivered a speech, in which he claimed that the events of October-March 2018-2019 in Ingushetia had been caused by the violation of the rights of Russian citizens and failure to comply with the requirements of the Constitution of Ingushetia, the advocate notes. According to her, Akhmed Barakhoev insists that he has been standing in the position of observing the law and in every possible way prevented any illegal actions directed both against fighters of the National Guard of Russia and against protesters.

However, the court did not take into account the arguments of the defence, and the period of Akhmed Barakhoev's detention remained the same: until February 10, the "Fortanga.org" reports on Instagram.

  • Lawyers doubt prospect of bills banning religious clothes

The bills that intend to ban wearing religious clothing, including niqabs, in public places are causing a split in the society, which is especially negative amid the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
