At action in Kananyan's support, NKR schoolchildren oppose minor HPPs

High school pupils from the Karvachar school have staged an action in support of Alexander Kananyan, an activist, who demands to stop building minor hydropower plants (HPPs) in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). Kananyan himself has stated that despite the deterioration of his health, he will continue his hunger strike until the authorities fulfil his demands.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 21, 2020, Alexander Kananyan, a resident of the city of Karvachar, went on hunger strike demanding to stop the construction of minor HPPs on the Trtu (Terter) River. On January 27, Mger Pogosyan, a resident of Stepanakert, joined the hunger strike.

On January 29, high school pupils of the Karvachar school refused to attend classes. In the afternoon, they were visited by Narine Agabalyan, the Education Minister, who talked to them trying to persuade the pupils to stop their protest and assuring them that a commission would be set up to study the operation and construction of minor HPPs. However, the pupils refused to stop the action, demanding to fulfil all the demands set forth in Mr Kananyan's statement, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, who was present at this meeting, has reported.
