Georgia invites Russian experts to Lugar Lab

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Georgia has invited Russian experts to come and make sure that no hazardous infections are being developed in the Richard Lugar Laboratory.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 26, the Russian MFA demanded to let Russian experts into all the buildings of the Richard Lugar Laboratory in Georgia to check the version that US militaries are designing hazardous pathogens there.

The Georgian MFA has denied the accusations of their Russian counterparts regarding the possible danger posed by the biochemical laboratory.

"The Georgian MFA calls on the international community, especially the parties to the Biological Weapons Convention, to assess the aggressive statements of the Russian MFA against Georgia, to condemn the overt disinformation and not to question the successful functioning of a model regional institute. To this end, although Georgia has no bilateral legal obligations on this issue, it is ready to conduct another visit exercise under the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons, including with the participation of Russian experts," the Georgian MFA said in its official statement posted on May 26 on its website.
