Abkhaz investigators open criminal case against men detained on border with Georgia

Three citizens of Georgia face even up to five years of imprisonment in a case on violation of the border with Abkhazia. The detainees have been kept at a temporary detention facility for 10 days, awaiting a decision concerning the pre-trial restriction measure.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 6, Abkhazian law enforcers detained three residents of the Georgian village of Muzhava, who were collecting scrap metal.

The detainees are Georgian citizens Butkhuz Kvirkviya, born in 1990, Mikhail Lamandziya, born in 1987, and Mate Lamandziya, born in 1992, reports the spokesperson for the State Security Service of Abkhazia.

The EU observer mission contacted the authorities of Abkhazia, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent learned from Abkhazian Foreign Minister Daur Kove. The Minister has noted that in the course of the Geneva Discussions, he repeatedly suggested making recommendations for residents of Georgia to prevent their detention at the border.

"There is no state border for the Georgian side, since they do not recognize the independence of our country. However, they should take care of their citizens to prevent their detentions," Daur Kove emphasized.
