Amid threat of coma, Azerbaijani oppositionist Yagublu transferred from SIZO to clinic

The health condition of the politician, Tofig Yagublu, who is on his hunger strike at SIZO (pre-trial prison) for eleven days already, continues deteriorating, despite the intravenous drug injections, his daughter has stated. Doctors warned that Yagublu was in danger of a coma.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 2, Tofig Yagublu went on a hunger strike. The court had sentenced him to four years and three months in prison. The verdict can be changed if the international community puts pressure on Azerbaijani authorities, human rights defenders believe.

Adil Geibulla, a doctor who visited Yagublu, said that the politician "can fall into a coma at any moment."

In her turn, Nigyar Khazi, Tofig's daughter, said that her father was transferred to a civil clinic after his advocate applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on the basis of the ECtHR's regulations. "They are usually applied when there are irreversible threats to human life," Ms Khazi has explained.

Agil Laidzhev, Tofig's advocate, treats the transfer to a civil clinic as the first step in resolving the issue of Yagublu's release.
