"Committee against Tortures" hopes the law will be respected in Chechnya prisons
Today, on February 28, 2007, the city of Grozny has hosted a sitting of the Committee for Security, Legal Order and Interaction with Power Agencies under the Parliament of Chechnya. The agenda covered the issues related to illegal methods of interrogation and preliminary investigation in the territory of the Chechen Republic.
It is reported that a flow of complaints on tortures and torments of detainees at the pre-trial detention facilities has a steady growth trend. During the latest 6 months, 120 facts of violence application have been revealed.
The final document adopted by the parliamentary group points to the necessity to bring to strict responsibility the respective employees of the Office of Public Prosecutor of Chechnya for their poor performance of official duties to supervise precise and rigorous observance of the law in custody facilities for a persons on remand. Besides, a necessity was stressed to liquidate the Temporary Custody Facility ("IVS") of the ORB-2 (Regional Security Unit), the message of the press service of the Committee against Tortures states.
