Number of hunger-strikers in Shukruti village rises to eight

Three women from the Georgian village of Shukruti sewed their mouths up and joined a hunger strike. The protestors demand from the “Georgian Manganese” Company to pay compensation for damage to villagers’ houses. On the fourteenth day of the hunger strike, eight persons are participating in it.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 11, three residents of the village of Shukruti in Imeretia sewed their mouths up. According to them, the operation of the “Georgian Manganese” plant causes the enormous damage to their houses. On May 18, it became known that the number of hunger-strikes had increased to five.

Today, on the fourteenth day of the hunger strike, three women have joined the protest action of the residents of the Shukruti village. The women have sewed their mouths up in protest. The hunger-strikers set up tents, one for men and the other for women. The protestors are lying on their beds in the tents, the “Mtavari Arkhi” TV Company reports with reference to the statement of the new participants in the protest action.

In particular, Tamar Kupatadze complained that nobody listened to the demands of the hunger-strikers. “Our houses are crumbling, and all houses in the village are crumbling, but only we are protesting and we have sewed our mouths up. We have made a decision: death or life,” the protestor said.
