Ingush authorities close ancient temple of Tkhaba-Yerdy
The Tkhaba-Yerdy temple located in the mountainous region of Ingushetia is closed for reconstruction after it was damaged by an earthquake on May 24, local authorities have informed.
The earth vibrations were felt in the Djeirakh District of Ingushetia, the press service of the district administration has noted.
Mariam Amrieva, a Vice-Premier, has instructed to take urgent measures to prevent further destruction of the temple. In particular, specialists will study the soil, since tectonic changes are taking place in this place, which can lead to deformation of the Tkhaba-Yerdy building. "In case of destruction, the architectural monument may lose its historical and cultural value," Ms Amrieva has stated.
The Tkhaba-Yerdy is one of the most ancient Christian buildings in Russia erected around the 8th century. It is located between the villages of Khairakh and Pui in the Assin Gorge, not far from the border with Georgia, the "Interfax-South" has informed.
