Oppositionist detained in Georgia

Law enforcers have detained Giorgi Chaladze, a leader of the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, for disobeying law enforcers. The oppositionist has linked his detention with his political activities.

Giorgi Chaladze, one of UNM leaders, who is also Director of the National Laboratory of Genetics, was detained on August 7.

It is noted that the maximum punishment under the article on disobedience to police is 15 days of arrest.

Mr Chaladze himself claims that law enforcers stopped him while he was driving a car and talking on a mobile phone. According to his version, he had a conflict with the police; as a result, the oppositionist injured his hand. His request to call an ambulance was reacted by insults from policemen and threats of arrest.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on July 18, Grigol Geegeliya and Tazo Datunashvili, members of the "Lelo" Party, were detained near the parliament building, where a protest action was held by activists and members of opposition parties.
