Georgian activists complain to prosecutor's office about wiretapping

Activists of three Georgian NGOs have turned to the prosecutor's office with a complaint about the secret wiretapping of their telephone conversations by the Georgian State Security Service (SSS).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Company learned about the wiretapping of public figures by Georgian special services. On August 1, Nika Gvaramiya, the director general of the TV Company read out records of phone conversations tapped secretly by the Georgian SSS. A number of NGOs and a journalist from Radio Liberty have confirmed the authenticity of the records.

Three activists of the NGOs "Georgia's Democratic Initiative", "International Transparency-Georgia" and "Centre for Social Justice" have demanded from the country's General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) to conduct an investigation in connection with the wiretapping of their telephone conversations. For example, Giorgi Mshvenieradze, an activist of the NGO "Georgian Democratic Initiative" NGO has stated his illegal shadowing.

However, Guram Imnadze, an activist of the NGO "Centre for Social Justice", has doubted the proper GPO's reaction. In his opinion, the reason for this is that the point is in the complaint against the country's SSS.

Let us remind you that according to the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Company, the information collected by human rights defenders and activists about the wiretapping of their conversation by special services is divided into two types – records of their personal conversations, including about intimate life, and activists' conversations about their activities.
