Oppositionists demand to restore work of public transport in Georgia

The ban on the operation of public transport does not reduce the number of cases of coronavirus infection, and it has only worsened the social situation of Georgian residents, as they face more difficulties while getting to work, protesters in Tbilisi claim today.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on August 10, Yekaterina Tikaradze, Georgian Minister for Public Health, called the epidemiological situation in the country difficult and announced a serious shortage of hospital beds.

The operation of urban municipal transport has been suspended in Georgia for the period from August 14 to September 4. The authorities have prohibited holding festivals, entertainment events, concerts and sports competitions, and there is also a ban on the operation of children’s entertainment centres.

Today, activists of the youth wing of the opposition movement “Anna Dolidze-for the People” have held a protest action near the Tbilisi City Mayoralty against the ban on the operation of public transport in Georgia. “We ask to restore the operation of public transport, as working people need to somehow get to work,” activists of the movement “Anna Dolidze-for the People” wrote on the Facebook page.

According to the activists, the restriction on the operation of public transport does not reduce the number of coronavirus infections, but deteriorates the socio-economic situation of residents of Georgia, the movement “Anna Dolidze-for the People” claims in its post.
