ECtHR obliges Azerbaijan’s authorities to pay compensation to two activists
According to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), the arrest of Azerbaijani oppositionists Ulvi Gasanov and Medjid Medjidli for distributing anti-government leaflets violated their rights to liberty and security of person. The ECtHR obliged the Azerbaijan’s authorities to pay each of the arrested activists 5850 euros.
Both activists took part in rallies in the early 2010s. A complaint filed to the ECtHR concerned their arrest in 2013 in connection with the distribution of leaflets. Ulvi Gasanov and Medjid Medjidli complained that their prosecution was unfair and that their arrest violated their right to freedom.
In July 2013, Ulvi Gasanov was detained near a metro station. Medjid Medjidli and activist Kenan Gasymly came to a police station upon being summoned. The detentions were provoked by the distribution of anti-government leaflets in public places. The court sentenced the activists to 15 days of arrest on the charge of disobeying the police.
Ulvi Gasanov, a member of the board of the “Nida” movement, is satisfied with the Strasbourg Court’s decision. “We were completely unreasonably arrested. We did not show disobedience to the police ... Then, on the eve of the presidential election, the country’s authorities harshly suppressed all forms of protest,” Ulvi Gasanov said.
