Petition in defence of Karabakh place names gains over 3000 signatures

After the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan requested Google to leave only Azerbaijani place names (toponyms) on the maps, activists compiled a petition stating that Google should prevent the removal of Armenian place names (toponyms) from the maps of Nagorno-Karabakh. The petition gained 3043 signatures in two days.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that after the end of the combat actions in Nagorno-Karabakh, the parties to the conflict began to exchange accusations in efforts to destroy the traces of the presence of the Armenian or Azerbaijani people in the mentioned territory.

The petition “Stop Azerbaijan from erasing Armenian cultural heritage” was posted on the “Change.org” platform “two days ago.” The petition was created by the “Centre for Truth and Justice” and is addressed to Google Corporation.

“On December 23, 2021, the Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially requested Google Corporation to replace the ‘distorted’ Armenian names on Google maps with Azerbaijani names ... The result will be a significant destruction of the Armenian cultural heritage of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), which is a form of cultural genocide ... Tell Google to stop Azerbaijan from erasing the Armenian cultural heritage,” the text of the petition reads.

By 1:01 p.m. Moscow time on January 5, the electronic petition to Google gained 3043 signatures. Some activists explained their position in the comments. “Google should not succumb to Azerbaijan’s propaganda and should not contribute to the cultural genocide,” wrote, in particular, user Lily Ray.
