Azerbaijani journalists demand to solve Elmar Guseinov's murder

On March 2, professionals from Azerbaijani independent media commemorated Elmar Guseinov, the editor-in-chief of the "Monitor" magazine, who was killed 17 years ago. Journalists have blamed authorities for the fact that the crime remains unsolved.

Elmar Guseinov was shot dead on March 2, 2005, on the threshold of his apartment. He repeatedly received threats, was subjected to criminal prosecution, and was in jail.

On March 2, a group of journalists from Azerbaijani free media, like in previous years, commemorated Elmar Guseinov. They came to his grave in the Yasamal Cemetery in Baku. Mekhman Aliev, the director of the "Turan" News Agency, has noted that the murder of Elmar Guseinov was aimed at "silencing the free press in the country", and therefore this crime remains unsolved, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) has issued a statement calling on the Azerbaijani authorities to "resolve the murder of the journalist, Elmar Guseinov, and punish the customers and perpetrators of the shocking crime committed 17 years ago."

The IRFS believes that "the actions and inaction of the investigating authorities of Azerbaijan, which have been investigating this murder over the past 17 years, indicate that authorities are trying to hide the truth from the local and international public, and are not interested in bringing the perpetrators of this crime to justice."
