Ten Tbilisi streets named after casualties of rally dispersal in 1989

On Saturday (April 9), Tbilisi commemorated the 21 persons, who perished during the dispersal by Soviet troops of the rally on April 9, 1989. The City Council named 10 streets after those who perished in those events.

The forceful dispersal of protesters in Tbilisi had sharply set the society against the country's authorities, the debaters on the 33rd anniversary of the events have stated.

On April 9, 1989, Soviet troops dispersed a peaceful oppositional rally held in Tbilisi. Due to militaries' actions and the stampede, from 19 to 21 people perished; several hundred other were injured. These events are known as "Bloody Sunday".

Residents of Georgia have commemorated those who perished during the dispersal of the rally. Government members, diplomats, public figures and dozens of ordinary citizens brought flowers to the memorial to the victims in Tbilisi.

The monument also has photos of the Georgian volunteers who perished in Ukraine. Many officials spoke about the tragedy that occurred 33 years ago in the context of the Ukrainian conflict.

The today's Georgia "stands on the gains of those who perished on April 9, 1989," Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister has stated, the "Georgia Online" reports.

"Those who heroically perished on April 9 have really created a new history. They sacrificed themselves for our country's independence," said Giorgi Tkemaladze, the chairman of the Tbilisi Sakrebulo (City Council).
