Baku law enforcers suppress the May Day opposition action

Seven persons were detained in Baku at the actions in defence of workers' rights, and released after questioning by the police. The oppositionists' demands to improve employees' working conditions are relevant, the couriers engaged in providing food delivery services have stated.

On May 1, about 10 activists of the youth movement "Democracy-1918" came out to a rally in Baku.

"In Azerbaijan, workers are mercilessly exploited. Often the working day lasts 10-12 hours. For many years, people in fear not to lose their jobs didn't dare to demand the respect of their rights. But now the situation is changing. The recent protest of food delivery couriers is an example. They demanded increased wages and improved security," Afiyaddin Mamedov, a member of the board of the movement, has stated.

A courier named Farkhad told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the earnings of food delivery workers have dropped significantly.

"By taking advantage of the high demand for workplaces, companies have hired a lot of couriers, but reduce their wages ... They ignore the risks of our work, as car drivers often push us out off the road and knock down motorcyclists," he has complained, adding that companies ignore their employees' protests.
