War veteran dies in Azerbaijan after public suicide attempt

Elvin Djafarov, a participant of the Karabakh war, died in a burn centre after committing a suicide attempt in front of the building of the regional government in Azerbaijan. Relatives explain the suicide of the war veteran by the authorities’ inattention to his problems, while officials reject the version voiced by Elvin Djafarov’s relatives.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that veterans of the Karabakh war in Azerbaijan repeatedly complained about poor social conditions and the authorities’ inattention to their problems. So, on March 28, participants of a protest action in Baku stated that the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) does not assign the status of war veterans to combatants who fought in Nagorno-Karabakh, thus depriving them of the right to public benefits.

Elvin Djafarov, a resident of the village of Galagai, a participant of the 2020 Karabakh war, died in a hospital, the “Turan” news agency reports. According to his relatives, Elvin Djafarov decided to commit suicide after he “could not get justice from the state.”

In turn, on July 11, Fazil Talybov, the chief of the press service for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, noted that Elvin Djafarov had been provided with social support from the state.

Sirageddin Djabbarov, the head of the executive authorities of the Sabirabad District, said that he did not refuse to meet Elvin Djafarov, the portal “1news.az” reports.
