Victims of Beslan terror act treat authorities' help as insufficient

Due to the absence of a law on terror act victims, the money allocated from the state budget to the victims of the Beslan terror act is not enough to treat and rehabilitate all the former hostages, the activists of the "Beslan Mothers" of and "Voice of Beslan" have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 1, a three-day memorial watch began in Beslan on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the terror act committed at School No. 1. Thousands of people came to commemorate those who perished.

On September 1, 2004, militants captured 1128 hostages in the gym of School No. 1 in Beslan. The operation to free them ended on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people perished, including 186 children; other 810 people received various wounds.

On September 1, the Committee "Beslan Mothers" held a press conference in the city's Palace of Culture. Aneta Gadieva, a co-chair of the committee, spoke about the difficulties in rehabilitating the victims and obtaining the medical care, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, who attended the press conference, has reported.

Ms Gadieva treated the absence of a law on terror act victims in the Russian legislation as the main problem. Because of this, according to her story, republics' budgets cannot envisage the expenses needed to support the treatment of former hostages.

Emma Tagaeva, an activist of the "Voice of Beslan", has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today that the idea of a law on terror act victims was not supported by authorities. "After the terror act, we, the 'Voice of Beslan', together with the victims of other terror acts, in particular, those committed in Volgodonsk and 'Nord-Ost', drafted a bill on terror act victims; but they refused to adopt this law," she has stated.
