Georgia drafts a bill on fighting racism

The Union "Civil Movement of Multinational Georgia" (CMMG) begins drafting the bill "On Fighting Racism and Racial Discrimination."

The CMMG representatives told the Regnum Agency that this initiative was caused by the fact that the current national legislation of Georgia assumes no punishment for the appeals that prejudice human rights under the ethnic principle, and, thus, does not ensure proper prevention of manifestations of intolerance.

The Union also intends to address the Government of Georgia with a request to set up a special monitoring body, which "will stimulate and define the activities directed against racism and racial discrimination, and also investigate into the cases of racial discrimination in the country." In the opinion of CMMG members, the body should also render legal assistance to victims of racism and racial discrimination.

The CMMG has noted that its members express "their full consent with the spirit of the statement of the President of Georgia made on May 24 at the Second International Symposium 'Dialogue Between Globalization and Civilization'." We remind you that President Saakashvili announced his intention to defend the rights of all ethnic minorities, who live in Georgia.

Today, the CMMG office will hold a press conference on the above issues.
