Court softens freedom restraint measure for policeman accused of torturing Yulduz Kurashova
A court in Khasavyurt has released Shamil Aliev, the policeman accused of torturing Yulduz Kurashova, a local resident, from SIZO (pre-trial prison) under house arrest.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 10, 2022, the court sentenced the policemen, Shamil Aliev and Ramazan Saipulaev, to 3.5 years in colony each, finding them guilty of torturing Yulduz Kurashova and falsifying proofs in the case of illegal sale of some potent drug. The court also found that the detective, Maya Akhmedova, was involved in the falsification; she was sentenced to one year of probation. On December 15 last year, the court of appeal overturned the verdict and sent the case back for a new trial.
The case of abuse of power with the use of violence was initiated after Yulduz Kurashova complained about the harsh detention and coercion to sign confessions to the sale of narcotic drugs.
According to the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project that reports with reference to Magomed Alamov, a lawyer of the "Team Against Torture"**, the term of Aliev's and Saipulaev's arrest was expiring, but the prosecution asked to extend it by three months more; and the victim has supported this demand. In its turn, the defence of the accused policeman demanded to release them from the SIZO, referring to the health condition of their family members.
