In May 2023, in the course of the ongoing armed conflict in Northern Caucasus, two people perished; and there were no reports about any wounded ones. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from open sources.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan reported that an 18-year-old native of the village of Novolakskoye and a 20-year-old native of Kaspiysk rendered armed resistance during an attempt to detain them and were killed in a shootout. Law enforcers found two grenades, a pistol and two knives in the venue. According to law enforcers, the young men had planned to attack law enforcers with these weapons.
The police have explained that on May 11, these two men attacked a taxi driver near the village of Tsyisha, the Kulin District, in order to seize his car. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has concluded that the attackers were "supporters of a religious extremist trend of Islam."
The last time victims of the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus were recorded in April 2023. Then, four people were killed and others wounded.
The given statistics cannot accurately reflect the number of victims. Not all the data is included into news bulletins. It is not always possible to check how true the statements of law enforcement bodies are; and new data on the events that happened in the reporting period become known sometimes after the publication of statistics on the "Caucasian Knot".
In other regions of Northern Caucasus, which include Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia-Alania, Stavropol Territory and Chechnya, no armed incidents or victims of the conflict were recorded in May 2023.
