Residents of Dagestan block highway due to water supply problems

Water supply problems in Dagestan have led local residents to block a section of the Astrakhan-Makhachkala federal highway.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 9, as a sign of protest, residents of Makhachkala blocked traffic along Magomed Gadjiev Street. They complained that they had no electricity in their homes for three days and there was no authorities' reaction. After a dialogue with officials, townspeople unblocked the street. Igor Krasnov, the republic's prosecutor general instructed his subordinates to look into the reasons for what was happening. Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan, stated that new protests would be suppressed.

"At the 470th kilometre of the Astrakhan-Makhachkala federal highway, about 150 local residents blocked the traffic. Their aim is to draw attention to the long absence of water in their homes," the republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported in its Telegram channel.

"During the highway blocking, a conflict broke out of the protesters demanding water supply to their homes, and drivers who were outraged by the blocking of the highway traffic," the MIA's report says.

According to the Telegram channel "Dagestan 24", residents of the dwelling settlement "Karaman-2", where there was no water all summer, came out to the protest.

Let us remind you that problems with power (electricity) supplies in Dagestan are systemic in nature; and no one deals with them, said Ziyaudin Uvaisov, the head of the "ZhKKh (Housing and Public Utilities) Monitor".
