Journalist Yusupov* notes decrease in Makhachkala residents’ interest in pickets for Palestine

Passers-by and drivers reacted less actively than earlier to the solo picket held by journalist Idris Yusupov* in support of Palestine. The picketer explained the decrease in the people’s interest by the emotional fatigue of the city residents from the news about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft), held a picket in Makhachkala in support of his convicted colleague Abdulmumin Gadjiev, and journalist Idris Yusupov* went to the picket under the slogan “Freedom for Palestine”.

Idris Yusupov* has noted that the response to his solo picket was lower compared to the first actions that he carried out in defence of Palestine. The journalist suggested that the reason for the decrease in the people’s interest was “city residents’ fatigue with the Palestinian agenda” and “the horrors of hostilities.”

Moreover, Idris Yusupov* explains the less active people’s reaction to his solo picket by the fact that the republic has accepted refugees from Palestine. “People may have calmed down, seeing that some steps are being taken. In fact, the tragedy continues,” Idris Yusupov* said.

On November 21, the authorities of Dagestan announced that the republic was ready to accept up to 200 refugees from Palestine.

Despite the intensity of the hostilities, residents of Dagestan have become accustomed to hear about the Palestinian agenda, suggests Abdulla, a resident of Makhachkala. The man believes that “emotional fading” occurs in relation to any events that initially caused a lot of emotions.

Events in Palestine are no longer perceived by people as emotionally as they were at first, agrees Zhamal, a resident of Makhachkala. The man emphasizes he expected other countries to “stop Israel,” but nothing of that kind did happen.

*On November 24, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) included Idris Yusupov into the register of foreign agents. The journalist filed an appeal against the Russian MoJ’s decision.
