Contract serviceman from Adygea convicted of abandoning his unit

The defence of Aliya Khalit, a contract serviceman, has challenged the verdict announced by the Maykop Military Court, pointing out that the reason for the serviceman's absence from service was in his health condition. However, the Southern District Military Court has upheld six year in jail for Aliya Khalit.

The tightening of Russia's legislation after the announcement of mobilization has led to more severe sentences for absence from one's military unit or desertion, human rights defenders have stated.

As reported by the website of the Southern District Military Court, Khalit was absent from service from October 15, 2022, to November 7, 2022, and from January 21, 2023, to October 23, 2023, during which time he spent at home. His advocate has pointed out that the court had ignored Khalit's illnesses, which were a valid reason for not appearing for duty. Besides, the Maykop Public Chamber asked to commute his sentence. In 2015, Khalit was also a volunteer of the "Donbass" battalion and took part in the special military operation (SMO), the advocate has added.

The above District Military Court has ruled that the sentence was fair and refused to satisfy the appeal complaint.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that the Maykop Garrison Military Court sentenced Vladimir Nazarenko, a contract serviceman, to a conditional sentence for being absent from his military unit for more than four months.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
