Case of pensioner from Gelendjik about discrediting Russian Army comes to court

The pensioner is accused under the criminal article on discrediting Russian militaries.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 12, 2024, it became known that the above 74-year-old pensioner from Gelendjik was charged under the criminal article for discrediting the Russian Army; the reason was in his posts and reposts placed in a social network. Earlier, in October 2022, the pensioner was brought to administrative responsibility on a similar charge.

According to investigators, from December 2022 to March 2023, the elderly man used his social network account for placing his posts and reposting others' posts containing information discrediting the Russian Armed Forces; the posts and reposts were available for public viewing to a broad range of people. The defendant has "fully admitted his guilt," says the website of the Investigating Committee for the Krasnodar Territory.

The article about discrediting the Russian militaries was created as a tool to suppress the dissent, the human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" stated earlier in its comment on a similar criminal prosecution of a resident of Taganrog. "It actually prohibits any criticism of authorities; this ban violates citizens' right to the freedom of expression," human rights defenders have pointed out.
