Rights defender Igor Nagavkin sentenced conditionally

A court in the Volgograd Region has sentenced Igor Nagavkin to two years probation, finding him guilty of disorganizing the work of the SIZO (pre-trial prison). He intends to seek recognition of his innocence.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the prosecutor demanded to sentence Nagavkin to three years in penal colony. Igor himself claimed his innocence and pointed out the improper work of the linguistic expert and the inadmissibility of using her conclusions at the trial.

Nagavkin stated that law enforcers had provoked him by placing him into the cell with "paedophiles," which caused a conflict with the SIZO staff on May 15, 2023. Yulia Novak, the author of the linguistic expertise, had treated the swear word addressed by Nagavkin to SIZO wards as a threat to their lives.

Igor Nagavkin said that he had not expected such a (probation) ruling and came to court with belongings and foodstuffs. "I thought they would place me in custody. But this is just a partial victory. My fight will continue ... The expertise was conducted in violation of the law. The judge listened to my arguments and saw all the inconsistencies in the case materials," he has stated.

According to Igor, the deputy regional prosecutor had signed the indictment of the theft of the jewellery, and for him it was a "matter of principle" to imprison him.

Nagavkin was accused of stealing some jewellery and sentenced to a prison term, but he was able to achieve release.
