Explosion in South Ossetia can be related to Russian presidential election

The today's explosion in the Dmenisi Unit of the Tskhinval District Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of South Ossetia can be related to the forthcoming election of the president of Russia.

The election was held right today in Dmenisi and neighbouring villages, and many people in the Republic are inclined to view this terror act as a manifestation of counteraction undertaken by Georgian leadership against participation of Russian citizens who live in South Ossetia in Russian presidential election. On February 26, the car was burnt down that belonged to the Chair of the "Yedinstvo" (Unity) South-Ossetian Party who had called her supporters to vote for Dmitri Medvedev.

Today, at 3:30 p.m., at the militia post of the village of Kokhat (near Dmenisi), a TV-set was confiscated from one of the Georgians who was passing by the post. The Georgian had no documents confirming that he had legally bought the TV-set, and the militiamen, suspecting that the TV-set could have been stolen, drew up a confiscation act and handed the TV-set over for temporary to the police station of Dmenisi village, where soon a powerful explosion occurred, as a result of which the building of the station was practically completely destroyed.

According to the updated information, two militiamen were killed in this terror act and two more were heavily wounded. About fifteen persons received minor injuries.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 26 Tbilisi stood against voting at election of RF President in the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia without coordination with the central Georgian authorities. Vyacheslav Kovalenko, Russian Ambassador to Georgia, was invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served a note of protest.
