In Dagestan, jury acquits defendant accused of sexual abuse of minor

On November 15, the jury of the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan fully acquitted Zhairula Umarov, a resident of Khasavyurt, accused of sexual abuse of a minor.

Let us remind you that, according to investigators, in summer of 2006, Zhairula Umarov brought his stepson, born in 2000, to a hotel of Khasavyurt and committed sexual assault against the boy. On August 14, 2011, Zhairula Umarov was detained, and on September 20, 2012, the trial in the case was started. The defendant did not admit his guilt.

"Prosecutor Vadim Latifov has claimed that the Zhairula Umarov's guilt had been completely proved and that was evidenced by the testimonies of the very boy and witnesses. Sapiyat Magomedova, the defendant's advocate, insisted that the testimonies given by the witnesses differ from each other and that the very boy testified reluctantly and hardly said a word. Besides, the advocate also pointed to the fact that the forensic examination was carried out with gross violations," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by a source from the Supreme Court of Dagestan.

According to the source, after the debate, Judge Zakir Israfilov raised 16 questions to the jury, including the following ones: whether there was a sexual assault, whether the Zhairula Umarov's guilt had been completely proved, and other questions. "The jury answered all questions unanimously and fully acquitted Zhairula Umarov. Judge released him from custody right in the courtroom," said the source from the Supreme Court.
