In Chechnya, local resident is suspected of "honour killing"

In Chechnya, a local resident is suspected of killing his sister. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by officials from the law enforcement bodies of the republic. On November 23, a 19-year-old female resident of the village of Tangi-Chu of the Urus-Martan District was found dead. Investigators believe the girl was killed by her brother, who treated her behaviour as disgraceful.

"The girl's body with signs of violent death has been found by her sister in the basement of the house belonging to their brother, who is suspected of committing the crime. Till present, the whereabouts of the suspect has not yet been revealed. There are reports that he fled outside the republic," said a source from the Chechen law enforcement bodies.

The so-called "honour killings" when close relatives punish young girls or women suspected of extra-marital relationships or family unfaithfulness began to spread in Chechnya in the 1990s.

"At present, a gossip or a rumour is enough for a girl or a woman to be killed and secretly buried somewhere. It's actually horrible," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Roza Sh., a resident of the republic.
