On June 28-July 4, 2021, five persons killed in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of June 28-July 4, 2021, at least five persons were killed in the ongoing armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. No wounded were reported. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

On the night of July 3, the counterterrorist operation (CTO) legal regime was introduced in Nalchik, and later, it was also introduced in Baksan. According to the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), five suspected militants were killed during the special operation. At 1:15 p.m. Moscow time, the CTO legal regime was lifted. According to the investigators’ version, law enforcers cordoned off two armed groupings with a total of five persons in Nalchik and in the vicinity of the village of Baksanenok. “When requested by the law enforcers to surrender, those persons opened fire on them from the firearms they had with them. The attackers were killed by return fire opened by the law enforcers,” the Investigating Department for Kabardino-Balkaria of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) stated in its report.

After the incident, the ICRF’s Department for Kabardino-Balkaria instituted two criminal cases under articles on illegal acquisition and storage of firearms, explosives or explosive devices, and on an attempt on the lives of law enforcers.

According to journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova, all five persons declared killed during the special operation had been kidnapped earlier. “Anzor Barazov, Arsen Mendokhov, Tamaz Chikhradze, Khasan Shogenov, and Khasanbi Khupserokov: all of them were kidnapped, their dead bodies were taken to a garden house, the CTO was announced, and a ‘battle’ was staged,” the journalist said with reference to her own sources.
