Protesters detained in Tbilisi

Policemen have detained about 10 people after the protesters against rising fuel prices blocked a street in central Tbilisi.

On March 27, several hundred people took to Republic Square in Tbilisi to protest against rising fuel prices. They held a rally and then marched along Rustaveli Avenue calling on the government to temporarily reduce the excise and the value added taxes on fuel, suggesting that these changes could reduce fuel prices, Avtandil Lolashvili, one of the organizers of the event, has explained.

About ten persons were detained at the action in Tbilisi after the marchers blocked a street in the city centre near the Heroes' Square.

Lasha Djokhadze, the head of the city's patrol police, urged protesters to unblock the street driveway, but only after law enforcers detained several activists, the traffic was partially restored, the Channel One of the Georgian TV has reported on its website.

Apart from Tbilisi, on March 27, protests against fuel price growth were also held in Batumi, Kutaisi, Telavi and Ozurgeti. The action in Tbilisi was the largest: several thousand people took part in the march, the "News-Georgia" reports.
