Activists note a decrease in number of Azerbaijani refugees from Ukraine
The flow of ethnic Azerbaijanis wishing to return to their homeland from Ukraine has decreased, activists involved in their evacuation point out. The Azerbaijani consulate in Kharkov has resumed its work and provides assistance primarily to Azerbaijani citizens.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in April, the natives of Azerbaijan, who left Ukraine after the beginning of the special military operation and returned to their historical homeland, complained about the insufficient attention of the country’s authorities to their problems. According to the refugees, they have to look for housing and livelihoods on their own.
The wave of Azerbaijanis wishing to leave Ukraine has subsided, since everyone who wanted to leave the country had already done that, said Nadjaf Akhmedov, the chair of the United Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis the Dnepropetrovsk Region.
According to Nadjaf Akhmedov, Ogtai Efendiev, a businessman of Azerbaijani origin, who lives in Ukraine, provided great material assistance to his compatriots.
In addition, Fizuli Ganbarov, the head of the Poltava organization of the Rada of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis, paid for the evacuation of about 3000 Azerbaijanis with his own money, and tens of thousands of people were helped with food, Galib Osmanly, an Azerbaijani from Kiev, states.
In Azerbaijan, refugees from Ukraine do not receive assistance in the same volume as in Europe, where assistance is financed by states, notes Lidia Shestak-Alieva, the head of a volunteer organization in Baku.
An official of the Ukrainian Embassy in Baku reports that men aged 18 to 65 cannot now leave Ukraine if they do not have an exemption from military service.
