Chechen law enforcers came for the girl-escapee from domestic violence

Law enforcers from Chechnya have arrived at the Moscow airport to pick up Selima Ismailova, who had escaped from domestic violence. The girl is very depressed and fears that she may be returned to her family, the advocate has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 12, policemen detained Selima Ismailova, a native of Chechnya. According to human rights defenders, they plan to hand her over to Chechen law enforcers.

"She is very afraid that she will be transferred there, because she understands that she will be treated cruelly there," said Anastasia Tyunyaeva, a lawyer from the NGO "Consortium of Women's Non-Governmental Associations", the Telegram channel named "Caution, News" reports.

Anastasia said that the girl's defence intends to appeal to the prosecutor's office, but noted that the likelihood that Selima will be taken to Grozny is "unfortunately high."

Selima Ismailova was hospitalized with suspected appendicitis, the "Sota" outlet has reported citing Ms Tyunyaeva. Also, Sofia Rusova, a lawyer of the Centre for the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence, has reported that the police forbade the ambulance to take Ismailova away from the airport.

Earlier, rights defenders have pointed out that Russia needs a law to be adopted prohibiting relatives from approaching violence victims or returning them to their family with the help of the police.

On October 29, 2022, in North Ossetia, border guards refused to let four sisters from Dagestan who had fled domestic violence into Georgia. On October 30, the girls were allowed into the territory of Georgia. They said that they had been regularly beaten up in their family.

In 2022, the number of appeals to the SK SOS Crisis Group with complaints of persecution in Northern Caucasus tripled, the Group has reported, citing the stories, in particular, of Leyla Gireeva, a resident of Ingushetia, and Magomed Askhabov, a native of Dagestan, as well as of Salekh Magamadov, Ismail Isaev and Elina Ukhmanova, who were taken to Chechnya and convicted there.
