Relatives of victims of Beslan terror act find creating new museum important

The director of the school museum dedicated to the Beslan tragedy is ready to share the exhibits with the new museum, which is being created directly on the site of the terror act. The victims and victims' relatives hope that the new museum will help preserve the memory of what happened.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Emma Tagaeva, an activist of the "Voice of Beslan", opposed the construction of the museum, since the investigation into the terror act in Beslan is completed, the construction of the museum in this territory could destroy the evidence. The "Beslan Mothers" committee, on the other hand, is in favour of the new construction, saying that it will become a place for people's consolidation.

On September 1, 2004, terrorists took 1128 hostages at School No. 1 in Beslan. The operation to free them ended on September 3. As a result, 334 people perished; 186 of them were children. Other 810 victims were wounded.

A museum in School No. 1 in Beslan is needed, said Nadezhda Gurieva, a history teacher and the director of the school museum at the new school, and one of the terror act victims. "Among the exhibits, there are some that cannot be exhibited at school because of the size and emotional impact," she has stated.

She believes that Emma Tagaeva's arguments against the museum are untenable.

On September 1, 2004, Irina, Nadezhda Gurieva's daughter, together with her mother, sister and brother, came to the school line-up. They all were taken hostage. Irina's brother and sister perished. "Every year, as we grow up and begin understanding more and more; therefore, every year it becomes harder and harder, because we realize the tragedy scale," said Irina Gurieva.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 13, 2017, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) recognized the violation of the rights of the relatives of those killed and injured during the seizure of the Beslan School and awarded 409 applicants compensations for a total of 2.955 million euros, and other 88,000 euros as compensations for legal costs. Russia ignores the ECtHR's findings and refuses to investigate the circumstances that led to numerous casualties among the hostages, Ella Kesaeva and Aneta Gadieva, activists, have stated.
