Supreme Court of Dagestan to reconsider violations of journalists' rights

The case of Rizvan Rizvanov, director general and founder of the weekly "Nastoyaschee Vremya" (Current Time) will be considered in the near future by the Presidium of the Supreme Court of Dagestan.

We remind you that on June 16 the investigatory committee of the investigatory department for the Kirov District of Makhachkala made a statement to initiate a criminal case against Rizvan Rizvanov under Article "Hindrance to lawful professional work of journalists". Then, a month later, the court of the Kirov District of Makhachkala cancelled this decision without the presence of the suffered party, but the judicial board of the Supreme Court later upheld it.

The Prosecutor's Office of Dagestan demands to cancel these decisions as passed through breaching the norms of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The statement passed by Suleiman Suleimanov, Acting Chair of the Supreme Code of Dagestan, runs that these decisions cannot be recognized lawful and justified; they should be cancelled, and Rizvanov's materials should be sent to a new judicial consideration by the court of the first instance, as the "Gazeta.ru" correspondent reports.
