    On May 23, in Moscow, representatives of the worldwide movement for human rights "Amnesty International" (AI) presented the report "Human Rights in Modern World", containing information about the situation with human rights in 2011 in 155 countries. The Russian version of the report provides information on 50 countries. The Russian part is largely devoted to the republics of Northern Caucasus, where the human rights defenders characterize the situation as unstable and uneven.

  • Police officer involved in road accident with death of woman in Stavropol Territory sacked from police

    Valery Kopchuk, Lieutenant of Justice, who was detained within the criminal investigation into the criminal case on death of a woman in a road traffic accident in the Stavropol Territory, was dismissed from the structures of internal affairs. This was announced by the Investigatory Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Russian Federation.     Ruslan Rakhaev, ex-Deputy Chief of Cherkessk Police, accused of beating to death a detainee, did not commit that crime. This was stated by his aunt Lydia Zhabelova and his sister Amina Kazakova from Nalchik. They conducted their own investigation and believe that the case against Ruslan Rakhaev bears signs of falsification. Rakhaev's lawyer believes that his client had no motive to commit the crime, of which he is charged. According to Adalbi Shkhagoshev, the State Duma Deputy, the version of Ruslan Rakhaev's relatives is worth attention of investigators.
